Easy smoked salmon appetizer is salmon on a waffle potato chip with garnishes.

With New Year's eve just around the corner I bet you can use some really stupid simple small bite recipes. Are you ready for a fancy pants hors d'oeuvres? Well, this easy smoked salmon appetizer definitely fits the bill. It's a crispy, creamy, smokey one bite wonder that pairs well with a cool, bubbly beverage.

Capers, pickled red onions and creme fraiche on a blue plate with a spoon.

What goes well on smoked salmon

  • Something creamy like creme fraiche, sour cream, hollandaise or honey mustard
  • capers, a dill pickle relish or chopped green olives (rinse capers and olives)
  • pickled red onions, lemon zest, fresh dill
  • chopped hard boiled eggs

To make this easy smoked salmon appetizer let's start with the potato chip. Waffle chips are your best choice for finger foods. They are crisp and strong enough to hold the toppings without crumbling in your hands. I also recommend a no-salt or less salty version as smoked salmon on it's own is quite salty. Next, the smoked salmon. You can layer on a very thinly sliced piece of salmon or go the extra mile and cut out shapes to fit the size of your chips. If your salmon is thick I definitely recommend using a sharp cutter for a more elegant presentation. Your guests will be so impressed.

Honestly, the garnishes are up to you. I personally love something creamy like creme fraiche or sour cream mixed with fresh dill and lemon zest. A hollandaise or tartar sauce could be equally delicious. I then layer on a few briny capers and some sweet pickled red onions for contrast and crunch. You could go all out decadent adding just a touch of caviar. That is it.

All that's left is for you to invite a few friends over, chill the champagne and get ready for the countdown. Enjoy yourself and may 2023 be your best year, yet. Love always.
