The three-day weekend hasn't obscured the true meaning of Memorial Day. While many people celebrate the day off with Memorial day events like picnics, 5k races, or family gatherings, others choose a different path.

These individuals skip the themed food and festive decorations to focus on solemn remembrance.

For many Americans, important Memorial Day events include taking a moment of silence for a fallen hero or maybe placing a wreath on a grave. It's also a time for thanking a veteran for his/her service or honoring our military by attending a parade. Yes, raise and wave an American flag and remember your freedom isn't free. This is the most important Memorial Day remembrance.

Memorial Day was created as an occasion to honor those who have paid the ultimate price to ensure our freedom. It is our opportunity to stop and give thanks for the many who have died protecting that freedom. It is also a time to reflect on how our veterans are loved and cared for when they come home. Do all you can to insure they get what they need.

Here are some Memorial Day recipes for when you gather to remember.

All veterans are on my mind this weekend, especially Tyler and William. We thank them for their service and are ever proud of them!

Yes we are. When William was deployed it was interesting to hear people say that they never knew anyone fighting in a war until then and now the whole thing was more meaningful to them

While I am new to your blog, it appears you are a Marine mom? Personally, I have the utmost regard for our military... and their families.

Good morning and thanks for stopping by. I am a Navy mom and a Marine mom (I have adopted a few of my son's brothers). My son, a US Navy Corpsman started out in Balboa hospital in San Diego then trained in field medicine. He was assigned to Camp Lejeune serving with 1/2 weapons company and then scout sniper platoon.

In reading some of your good recipes (Cook's Illustrated is my Bible), I believe I somewhat understand what has happened. I am truly sorry for your loss.
