This easy naan bread recipe is a teardrop-shape double-leavened flatbread from North West India. Sesame and nigella seeds are optional but add a lovely nutty note. With only a 1 hour rise and 4 minute oven bake you can enjoy this soft bread with a slightly chewy bite any time of the day.

Not quite sure how I got through the very first blog post let alone two years worth, but here I am still going strong. Yup, strong. It is what one must be to get through a parent's worse nightmare, but no sad chat today.

Fall Inspiration

Today, as I ease into another season, I just want to share a few of my favorite fall season photos of William and a most requested flatbread recipe from my King Arthur Flour baking class.

Oh how I miss my garden helper of a son.

My hunter boy...oh, yes, he cleaned it, I cooked it and he ate it.

Naan Bread Recipe

I love this Greek yogurt naan bread because it is so easy to make. Plus, with two leavening agents the rise time is short.

  • Start by mixing the dry ingredients and wet ingredients separately and then just whisk them together.
  • Gently knead the shaggy dough into a smooth shiny ball.
  • Then, let it rise for just 1 hour.
  • Next, divide the dough into 4 pieces and hand-stretch or roll into tear-drop shapes.
  • Bake at 500F. for 3 minutes, flip and bake 1 more minute or until golden brown.
  • Pre-bake toppings are optional.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups (16 oz.) King Arthur unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons rapid-rise yeast
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons milk
  • ½ cup full fat plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons ghee melted or 2 tablespoons avocado oil
  • 1 egg beaten

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 500F. Line baking sheet with parchment.
  • In bowl, of a stand mixer fitted with whisk attachment, combine flour, yeast, sugar, baking powder and salt. Whisk until well blended, about 30 seconds.
  • In another bowl, mix milk, yogurt, ghee and egg.
  • Add wet ingredients to dry and whisk to form a shaggy dough.
  • Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
  • Using gentle pressure knead dough until it forms a smooth ball. The dough should bounce back if pressed with your finger.
  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover and let rise 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Divide dough into 4 pieces and hand stretch into an oval shape.
  • Option: brush with melted ghee or lightly beaten egg white and sprinkle with sesame and nigella seeds.
  • Place on prepared baking sheet and bake for 3 minutes. Flip and bake 1 minute more.

Notes

Optional ingredients: additional melted ghee, sesame seeds, nigella seeds and egg whites.
Unsalted butter and oil can replace the ghee with a result of slightly different texture and flavor.
