The French dip sandwich with chips on the side.

The French Dip sandwich. Just the name conjures images of tender, thinly sliced roast beef nestled in a crusty roll, ready to be dipped into a savory, flavorful au jus. This isn't just a sandwich; it's a mouth-watering experience. And with the right techniques and quality ingredients, you can easily recreate this classic sandwich at home. This guide will walk you through the steps to make the best French Dip sandwich recipe.

The Essential Components of a French Dip Sandwich Recipe

Mastering the art of this lunch special is simple. At its core, the French dip sandwich recipe relies on three key elements: the beef, the bread, and the au jus. Let's break down each one to ensure sandwich perfection.

Selecting and Preparing the Beef

The star of the show is undoubtedly the beef. For the most tender and flavorful results, consider using cuts like roast beef, sirloin, or even leftover prime rib. The key is to slice it thinly - think deli-style. If you're cooking the beef specifically for this sandwich, slow roasting a chuck roast or using the sous vide method to cook the beef will yield incredibly succulent results.

Remember to season generously with kosher salt and perhaps a touch of garlic powder or herbs before cooking. I also like to add Worcestershire sauce. Allowing the cooked beef to rest before slicing ensures the juices are retained, contributing to a more flavorful sandwich.

Choosing the Right Bread

The bread provides the structural integrity and textural contrast to the tender beef. A sturdy yet slightly soft roll is ideal. Options like a French baguette, hoagie roll or even a hearty ciabatta work wonderfully. The bread should be able to withstand dipping without becoming soggy too quickly. Lightly toasting or warming the bread under a broiler adds a delightful crispness and enhances its flavor. You can even rub a clove of garlic on the cut sides for an extra layer of aroma.

Crafting the Flavorful Jus

A French dip sandwich and sauce on a cutting board.

The au jus is the soul of the French dip. This rich dipping sauce is typically made from the drippings of the roast beef, enhanced with beef broth, aromatics, and sometimes a touch of red wine or Worcestershire sauce. To make a most delicious au jus, deglaze the roasting pan or hot skillet with beef broth after the beef is cooked. Scrape up any flavorful browned bits from the bottom. Simmer this mixture with a bay leaf, a sprig of thyme, and perhaps a crushed garlic clove for about 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Strain the au jus before serving to ensure a smooth consistency.

If you don't have pan drippings, you can create a flavorful au jus by simmering high-quality beef broth with similar aromatics. If you have prepared my recipe for sous vide roast beef then simply reheat the reserved liquid from the cooking bag and season to your taste with salt and pepper.

How to assemble a sandwich

Once you have your perfectly sliced beef, toasted bread, and flavorful au jus, it's time to assemble your homemade French dip sandwich. Slice your chosen roll lengthwise, leaving one side hinged. Layer the warm, thinly sliced roast beef generously inside the roll. Serve immediately with a generous bowl of warm au jus for dipping.

Can I make French Dip in a slow cooker or crock pot?

Absolutely! Slow cooking a chuck roast is a great way to achieve incredibly tender beef for your sandwiches. Instead of slicing, shred the beef after cooking and use the accumulated juices as the base for your au jus.

What are some good side dishes to serve with a French Dip?

Chips, French fries, onion rings, creamy coleslaw, or a simple side salad all pair well with this sandwich.

Can I dip the sandwich in something other than the au jus sauce?

Absolutely. While a hot au jus is the standard, I sometimes like dipping my sandwich in a tasty barbecue sauce. A creamy cheese or horseradish sauce will also be delicious.

Is French Dip Really French?

No. The French Dip sandwich is believed to have originated in Los Angeles, California. The name likely refers to the French bread the sandwich was originally served on.

What kind of cheese goes best in a French dip sandwich?

Huh? Once you add cheese I think this becomes a cheese steak and not a French dip sandwich recipe, but if you must. Provolone cheese and Swiss are classic choices due to their meltability and mild flavor that complements the beef.

Mastering a delicious French dip sandwich is a rewarding culinary endeavor. At the end of the day it is such a simple recipe and perfect for a Father's Day luncheon. By focusing on quality ingredients and proper techniques, you can create a truly satisfying and flavorful meal that will impress your family and friends. So, gather your ingredients, prepare your au jus, and get ready to experience the simple yet profound pleasure of a perfectly crafted French dip sandwich recipe.
